Practice

Pilates in Vila Nova de Gaia

In Pilates, breath, conscious movement and balance go hand in hand.

Pilates

Every exercise is performed in a controlled way, coordinating breath with movement and seeking proper spinal alignment. Practice can help:

  • Strengthen the core, including the deep abdominal muscles, lower back, pelvis and spine-stabilising muscles
  • Improve posture and body alignment
  • Develop mobility, flexibility and coordination
  • Build balance and stability
  • Increase awareness of breathing and how the body organises itself during movement
  • Release built-up tension, especially in the shoulders, neck and back

The work isn't just about the surface abdominal muscles. It aims to build deeper, more balanced support, helping the body move with greater safety and efficiency in everyday life.

A Whole-Body Practice

While many people associate Pilates with abdominal strengthening, the practice engages the entire body. The use of the ball, resistance band and roller adds variety to the practice and allows for gradual progression, always respecting each participant's level.

With consistency, practitioners can feel stronger, more stable and more coordinated, both during class and in everyday activities. The goal isn't to move quickly, but to learn to move better — with more precision, fluidity and awareness.

Who It's For

Classes are suited to people of different ages and experience levels, including those just starting a physical activity, those wanting to complement their yoga practice, or anyone looking for a conscious way to build strength.

The intensity and complexity of exercises are adjusted to the needs of each group and each person. No prior experience is required — just bring the willingness to learn, breathe and listen to your body.

A Therapeutic & Postural Dimension

Pilates can be a complementary practice for those who want to care for their back, improve spinal stability and prevent muscular imbalances. Through low-impact movements, the body is progressively challenged, without losing attention to breath, comfort and quality of execution.

The practice can help:

  • Recognise and correct inefficient postural patterns
  • Strengthen the muscles that support the spine
  • Improve lumbopelvic stability
  • Build greater confidence in movement
  • Reduce stiffness linked to immobility and repetitive postural habits
  • Prepare the body for the demands of daily life and other physical activities

When persistent pain, injuries or specific clinical conditions are present, exercises should be individually adapted and, when necessary, carried out under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Pilates does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

A Physical & Dynamic Dimension

For those looking to improve their physical condition, classes help develop strength, muscular endurance, agility and movement control.

Teacher

Isabel Henriques has been a Yoga and Pilates teacher since 2018. Her approach combines technical knowledge, attention to alignment and a holistic view of wellbeing, creating classes that are thoughtful, accessible and adaptable.

In her classes, physical strengthening goes hand in hand with developing body awareness and breath quality. Every participant is encouraged to respect their own limits, recognising that progress comes through regular practice, presence and listening to the body.
